Fallout (NOT 3)

Postby ken_cinder » Mon Jun 01, 2009 9:27 pm

I've never played the first games, after playing 3 I decided I wanted to check them out.

I don't mind isometric games (I LOVE the Diablo games) and I don't mind turn based games either.
That said, why am I not "feeling" this so hyped and rabid-fanboy'd game? I've been trying to get into it for 2 days, and I'm just not having it.

I'm finding it slow, boring and somewhat(see; TOO) difficult. I run out of Stimpaks while fighting multiple enemies, or I have to "run away" and heal and then come back (Adds to the "slow" feeling).
Finding the UI and controls to be a bit of a pain in the ass too, but I can deal with those kind of flaws.

What am I missing? The game SEEMS like it could be good, but I keep finding myself getting pissed off and quitting.
Anyone else play this game and like it? Any suggestions on hot to not grow to hate it?

Try Fallout 2. It's like 1, but improves upon everything. They're not fast paced, but once you get going, they're quite immersive. You might like 2 better though.

I love those games. It was hard for me the first few attempts as well but after another try and taking my time i had a blast. Take time to level up and grab some good gear weapons and so on.

I happened to like the first more than the second one.

I'm a big fan of Fallout, and I've probably finished it ~8 or 9 times over the last decade. I liked Fallout 2 also, but it felt just a little too forced for me.. like they were running on fumes. Fallout 3 is just a different beast altogether.

I can't give you any hints on how to enjoy Fallout 1. I don't think playing Diablo and Fallout 3 are any preparation for it - it might share an isometric POV and some similar thematic elements, but the similarities end there imo. After 10 years this is a game I can always come back to and find something new in it. I can't say the same for Fallout 3, although I do like some aspects of it in different ways.

Re: equipment. That's the most important part of the game - be frugal with your ammo/weapons and THINK your way through battles. If you're running away mid-battle or running out of stims, you're doing just fine :) The game is not for casual players -- a lot of new players give up due to the perceived difficulty and that's a shame... save often and don't be afraid to replay a battle or three.

Also, you'll want to manage your character skills appropriately - I don't suggest trying to finish the game with a Melee-only character (it is possible, but REALLY hard).. at some point you're going to need to point a gun at someone. Use all of your skills (doctor, first aid) and get some followers (ie. Cassidy). Best solution is to be a specialist of some kind and stick with that - since XP are tough to come by it's not possible to max every skill out.

Like I said - the game is truly unforgiving and turns off a lot of people in the first few hours, but oh baby does it pay off. If you want to read about a few other players new to F1's experiences, check out Michael Abbott's blog here: http://www.brainygamer.com/the_brainy_g ... out-3.html

(He got his students to play Fallout 1 and 2 over a few weeks, and many had the same experience as you)

I've gotten into it a bit more, I still find it a little irritating at times and frustrating, but I *think* I'm starting to like it.

One thing that is absolutely stupid, is how some dialogues go. You take on a quest and change your mind, the person gets mad at you and attacks you and the whole town kills you? WTF is that crap.
Give a seemingly harmless answer, one person attacks you and again the whole town attacks you. Nonsense.....
Whoever came up with those, is an idiot. Really takes any "feeling" out of the game and immediately makes you feel like you're playing a VERY poorly scripted, pre-determined "show".

thats how it is in real life. If you came to ajax and pissed me off youd have to fight off the entire Durham region population.

When I heard that Fallout 3 was going to be an FPS \TPS, i was not on board. There are far too many FPS and TPS games, why not be different and stay with an old school feel?

There was another fallout game after 2 but before 3, it was called the brother hood of steel. Anyone play that ?

The why not is they have an amazing engine they built (for Oblivion and possibly prior games) so they need to make use of it.

Anyways, I wanted to ask what other games are similar (FPS action but deep skills and NPC interaction) ??

Keep in mind this is post apocalpse, I'm sure if you had a small community it would be very tight knit, and trust nobody... especially someone who could be a threat. Not that people in general think the worst all the time of others and act on it without thinking.

Oh wait! They do :P

Well, even if thats wrong use it to justify it

Mass Effect might fit that bill. It certainly has better NPC interaction than any of Bethesda's games.
