how many cabinets needed for true arcade status?

Postby c0nn0r » Fri Nov 11, 2016 3:26 pm

Hey gang,

I was wondering; how many cabinets does it take to officially call a location an arcade? Places like 7/11 used to have 1 or 2 cabinets inside back in the 90's. Hotels often had 3 or 4 cabinets somewhere near the pool. I certainly would not call the 7/11 an arcade, and I would hesitate to call the game rooms in hotels arcades. So, the question remains; how many cabinets are needed to call a location an arcade?

>= 5?

I always thought of an Arcade as a dedicated place for coin op games, not a laundry mat, pizza parlor or convenience store. They might sell pizza and drinks at the arcade but it's not the primary business. The number of machines could vary, but to me the business model is what's always differentiated an Arcade from an establishment with games.

10 games was the official definition of an "arcade" by operators - less than 10 games was just called a "street location" by operators.....

Great bit of info that. Thanks. I've asked this same question elsewhere and nobody had anything concrete.

9 more cabinets to go boys!!
