Any Ghost in the Shell fans here?

Postby jasonec » Mon Nov 09, 2015 9:37 pm

The next movie is out in theatres Nov 10, 11 and 16 only (http://www.ghostintheshellnewmovie.com/)
It looks like the movie theatres that are showing it in Ontario are only showing it on the 16th though (at 7pm) when you go to the site....

Just came back from the theater - great movie!
It has the fast-moving and complex plot typical of Ghost in the Shell ;-)
But you have to first binge watch the "Ghost in the Shell Arise" series (1-4)...the movie makes a lot of references to it and sort of builds upon where it left off.

More good news for Ghost in the Shell fans......next year, there's going to be a big movie release: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_in_the_Shell_(2017_film)

And.....it's going to star Scarlett Johansson!

Scarlett Johansson has the acting ability to play the role, her playing Black Widow pretty much shows that (Lucy as well). Still would have liked to see what an up and coming actress could have done with the role.

Yeah - there are a lot of people on the Internet who are pissed that they aren't casting an Asian actor instead of Scarlett Johansson.
I'm fine with it myself.....just as long as the Tachikoma isn't voiced by Seth Rogen

The whole "whitewashing" controversy today has been kind of trippy. Suddenly everyone on my Facebook feed is an expert on Ghost in the Shell, especially the people who probably couldn't tell you what a "manga" is. :D

I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with casting Scarlett Johansson... Major Kusanagi's ethnicity (to the extent a cyborg can even have one) is ambiguous, and Masamune Shirow may have always intended for her to be Caucasian. I'm sure Johansson will do a fine job, though I wouldn't be shocked if her performance is essentially "Black Widow, but blue hair and a jacket!"

That said, Rinko Kikuchi would have been my choice hands down. She's a lot closer to how I always pictured the Major (tall, athletic, Japanese) compared to ScarJo (short, curvy, Scandinavian), the character plays to her strengths as an actress, and GitS isn't the kind of film where having an A-list star is going to make a difference at the box office.

Nothing to do but hope for the best, I s'pose.

Yeah I was kind of thinking Rinko Kikuchi would have been a better choice.

Just saw this tonight at Landmark in Kitchener.
I had high expectations going in, and it blew them all away.
The movie is absolutely incredible. See it in IMAX 3D if you can! :D

I need to watch this. I will get to it one day soon. I am not a big ghost in the shell fan, I haven't watched much of it but I want to try to watch the movies and as much of the series as I can.

I don't watch much anime in general but I used to but that was about 20 years ago. Now I cant stand most of it.
