Windows 10 Automatic Update

Postby Cornchip » Tue Feb 02, 2016 11:26 pm

Windows 10 might be creeping onto Windows 7 and 8.1 PC's quietly as an update. I hear it's 6 gigs. Depending on how many PC's you have, that might hurt your monthly bandwidth. If you like your 7 the way it is, turn off your automatic updates or at least choose the updates you want manually. It's said MS wants a Billion installed copies on a free model to get a revenue stream from 'app' sales similar to Apple and Android. Be warned.

I've been using Win10 since before the release (developers need it to run certain development tools, so it wasn't an option).
It's the best version of Windows released to date - easy, intuitive, and faster on the same hardware compared to Win7/8.
Not too concerned about the Windows app store - honestly, I'll never go there to buy stuff.
Similarly, I'm not too concerned about a 6GB download - I download far more than that for "other" things ;-)

I like the feel of Win 10 over 8.1...so the upgrade is welcome. I just worry for my PC's on 7 and 8.1 that run software that's business related. If I paid for my operating system, I should have a say....and so far the final upgrade is still in my hands. The fear is a mandatory upgraded without my consent.

Updated one computer with it, and I hate it. I'll be going back to windows 7 whenever I feel like formatting and reinstalling it. Lesson learned.

It isn't uncommon for people on this forum to prefer retro things ;-)

I feel that until you've made the OS do everything it can do you shouldn't upgrade.

Ive had 10 for about 6 months. Made my POS slow computer run slightly faster (but still slow as hell)

I have no complaints.

I disable automatic updates, before installing updates I check what each one is for and avoid ones that I don't need or want. I don't get messages telling me to update to Windows 10 as I didn't install the updates designed to nag users.

I don't want Windows 10 more for privacy type issues. Plus from what I've read it seems Microsoft wants to have updates for Windows 10 sent from other users rather than from their own servers, anything to save their own bandwidth even if it now uses more of yours. It's an option that can be disabled but is on by default. I don't see why I should bother with it.

They're getting even more aggressive in their upgrade notifications.....

I finally ended up adding to my file explorer prompt window "take ownership" so I could remove gwx.exe. Also uninstalling the update that installs the malware to begin with, and then eventually hiding that update solves the upgrade issue completely.

I feel that windows 10 shouldn't be dismissed as quickly as some people do.

It is indeed very different from windows 7 if you are a veteran but you can adapt the interface to be very similar.

Unfortunately this requires a bit of work. For example removing the quick access so that "My computer" is the same as windows 7 in folder options. Or customizing the start menu and so on.

At first I cringed at a few points but once I saw how much customization there was, I was able to adapt it to my liking.

I do agree that the defaults are really annoying to navigate in.

If you don't want Win10, and you never want to see an upgrade message pop up, just download the free app "Never10" (http://www.pcworld.com/article/3048836/ ... ws-10.html)

Unless, of course, you're running an ancient version of Windows.....then it may be time to upgrade:
