Scored an Omnibot.... Whooo!

Postby mike boss » Thu Jul 20, 2017 2:37 pm

I remember back in the day my rich cousin had one of these.
I've loved this toy since I was a kid. Always on the look out.....never quite able to track one down.
Finally tho I did ! $80 near complete in box. Only thing missing is the charger.

I'm looking for a 6VDC, 400mA with a negative center pin charger... tried eBay. Found similar specs, but nothing about the center pin.
I've also found replacement batteries locally (Scarborough) for about $15. None currently in stock, but I hope to pick up 2 in the next week or so.

Robot is in good shape, small crack on the dome & a small broken area on the arm that I can easily glue.

All in all very happy with this lil guy.

You could use a voltmeter/multimeter to determine if the center tip is positive or negative. If you find a positive tip you could always reverse the wires to make it a negative one.

I tracked down some replacement batteries in Scarborough.
Very reasonable, about $15 or so. Sadly they were not in stock when I went today.
I'll need to go next week.
Still haven't tracked down or tackled the charger issue..... but I will !
My son is in love with this guy....always wants to go downstairs and see the "robot."
Once he sees it ripping around the basement I'm sure its game on!

Regarding your battery I just revived a 4 yr old dead SLA battery using distilled water..I did it more as an experiment but it went from a 1.1V battery to a 6.3 volt battery--so if you can't find a new battery that fits, you might be able to revive this one (plenty of youtube vids about it--don't add salt though!)

just a thought...

This toy rocks..

I still need to go get the battery.
I haven't been diligent in my quest for a charger.
Soooo busy these days.

None the less it looks cool as f**k on display !

Pretty neat. I remember kinda wanting one of these as a kid. Who didn't???

But I think they were expensive; supposedly ~$250 in '84 (http://www.robotsandcomputers.com/robots/omnibot.htm).

Awesome reference: http://www.theoldrobots.com/omnibot.html

I haven't had much time to work on or play with the Omnibot.
I'm still trying to track down a charger for it.... no luck yet !
I picked up a new battery the other day in Scarborough.
I had been to the store a few times, but they were never in stock.
Anyway I finally managed to get the battery. I didn't want to hack the old barrel connector off the old one.
So I ordered some replacement ones off Ebay. I don't think I'd ever sell the Omnibot, but I still would like to keep it as original as possible.
Anyway, I got the barrel connector and added some quick connects to it (pictured).

Today I put 4 brand new AA batteries in the remote, but the remote is not working ! #$%^ !!!!!! --- This is something I won't be able to fix.
I put the new battery in the Omnibot, and I got that electrical burn smell. The LED display worked, so I know the bot works....but that smell !
When I opened the bot to take out the battery it seemed like the wires were slightly melted. I have no idea why that may be.
I'm kinda at a loss.

Did you triple check you got the polarity right when adding the connector? (not by matching wire colors, but by measuring voltage)
