Demand definitely changes over time for sure.
There was a time when MSPac machines went for $200 because nobody wanted them.

Dude... The "crappy" keyboards from school computer lab command 3 and sometimes 4 figures on eBay.

Heck I just got into this in December, but remember all the times I saw stuff cheap, and thought "nah, too big, crazy hobby"... Yet here I am

JBL speakers from the 1970s are the same. A decade and a half ago you saw the same low prices too. People asking $250 for speakers that now command $5000+ today. Then you got companies known for restoration. They can ask (and get) $20k+ for the same speakers overseas. Nuts.

Vintage audio is insane.

I'm glad I got in and out of that hobby when I did.
Scored some of the nicest monster receivers and turntables ever made and got to sponge off a ton of knowledge that's transferrable here..

The best way to get into vintage audio or musical instruments is to first inherit a few hundred million dollars.

I hear that's also the first step in arcade collecting.

Sort of like that old adage, "the easiest way to make a small fortune trading in collectibles is to start with a large fortune". :)

See, I always used to have the issue of space... That George Carlin bit about "Stuff" comes to mind.

The f@ck3d up part of it is that my returns on investments have been lower than if I had just boarded a bunch of stuff I wanted 10 years ago. I'm just guessing, but the fact it's that close is crazy. Weird how it come back around... the people with money wanna buy all their old crap back at a premium now

I snagged a Sansui G-8000, which is a ringer of a story in itself, but also got a g-6700 and a g-4700.

I repaired the digital display for the analog tuner on the 6700 which was an awesome process and then recapped that beast.

The G-8000 is factory, and has been serviced but operates perfectly in all its majestic beauty. Switches have no static and operate as per norm.

Turntables are interesting in their variety, but I fell into a sony psx600. Modern enough to have decent reliabilty but made in an era that pushed every limit to provide unrivaled performance, from the base units feet up to the servo assisted arm.

I would highly recommend any of the servo-assisted arm turntables with a moving coil cart.

Can get into this more, maybe another thread?

No worries if it's in this thread - getting off topic is the modus operandi for us CCGC'ers.
