CRT Repair

Postby c0nn0r » Thu Mar 22, 2018 8:18 pm

Hey guys,

have a Nano MS9 (https://wiki.arcadeotaku.com/w/Nanao_MS9) in a SEGA New Astro City arcade cabinet that has what I believe to be bad solder joints. The device powers up and displays a nice picture, but when the unit is banged the colours will change for a moment. I have noticed that now that it’s much older it takes just a little bang to make the colours change for a moment. I believe this is a cold solder joint.

Is there a preferred or recommended CRT repair technician in the GTA area that anyone can recommend?

If you want to drive to Brantford I can cap it, reflow it, clean the pots, etc tomorrow. You are 1 hr drive here.

Thanks for the offer, but I don't have a car. I'll likely have to do the fix myself. Would you mind sharing any resources you might have that I can use to guide me in the process? I've not been able to find any definitive details.

Here is a list of some of the resources I've found:

Quick update as well:

I left the NAC on for a few hours this morning to warm-up a bit, as it's been quite cold in my game room lately. Now that it's warm, I am able to bang on the cabinet without seeing any flickering issue on screen. From what I understand this is a classic indicator of bad/cold solder joint(s).

Not sure what resource you look for but neither those show website. Yes sound like bad solder joint for those symptoms. If you pull chassis out you will have to solder all connections on the board, neckboard, remote board etc again. Also if you have trouble of getting it out then you can put new capacitors on it too :-)
