arcade 1up machines almost here... price drop now $399 CAD
I know you all know about these and it's getting close to release date. So.. anyone of you planning to buy one or all of these things? or you can't justify the price. I will be getting the Street fighter version. To me it will be worth it, for the clean art work and the 3 games etc. As someone who doesn't have great DIY skills this is a good option for me.
The thing I hate is that the U.S got 100$ price drop now $299, but we still have to pay $499 in CAD
So are you getting one or more of these and what ones?

Re: arcade 1up machines almost here...
I think they seem cool as f**k personally.
I'd like to see if they can be/will be hacked to add more games.
Like many the price point is off putting, $300 US vs $500 CDN! $200 difference is quite substantial, then you add the tax, $565 all in.
I think pricing them inline with some of the console systems would have made sense.
None the less, I hope the company does well and you continue to see new models come to market.
I think retro gaming seems to be experiencing a high right now and I'll be interested to see how these do.
Many YouTuber's are making CONSTANT videos talking about these. I saw one where somewhere in the US these were out and on the shelves, and WalMart had dropped them by like $70 so in and around $230 US. Crazy !

Re: arcade 1up machines almost here...
I love when new things are introduced to the hobby. Some people are fired up, raving mad that a company would dare make such a thing. This reminds me of the home version pinball that Stern put out a couple years back. Pinside was lit up with irate members, bad mouthing Stern and wasting time and energy on a product that wasn't meant for them in the first place. Their actions seemed rather childless and silly, how dare Stern make something except their pins, funny.
Personally I think these are cool, not for me but cool none the less. You'd be hard-pressed to build a cabinet with full art and quality parts for the 500 they're asking. If anyone on this forum buys one, post a video, would love to see the interface.

hey do you guys think with this release of these 3/4 "arcades cabinets" that people will be offering the full size cab or bar tops at least a bit cheaper because of the value you can get with one of these. screen, artwork etc... also
really not many of you farts are interested in this? @mwong not even one?

I'm glad we saw the price drop here.
I think it would be sweet if Bed Bath and Beyond Canada carried them @ the same price and allowed use of the 20% coupon.
I think the will certainly find success, even if just a niche market.
I heard a YouTuber say it, you need to look at them like they were toys.
Will you find better arcade cabinets, could they have used better parts, better hardware, software, I'm sure they could have.
But I think they are most defiantly a cool novelty. I also saw some uses on YouTube reference adding a Raspberry Pi or Pandoar's Box to these.

I wouldn't count on a price drop from people that make full or bartop cabinets. I make both and I also sell for a sensible amount and I don't make a lot per machine. These machines while cool, don't really compare to what I make but are nice for how much they cost.

Okay, these cabs have been out for roughly a year - have any CGCCers made the plunge to purchase one? What's your verdict?
There's been some passionate discussions about these cabs on other forums - my own take is that I'm open to anything that provides gamers a "fix" so they can enjoy that arcade experience. Sure, there are other options to play MAME with bigger and sturdier cabs, but at minimum the 1Ups are more widely available so there's greater opportunity for people to consider reliving an arcade-like experience, or experiencing it for the first time. It would be great if any Arcade 1Up owners made their way to this forum as the result of purchasing one.

I know someone who has purchased these, he has replaced all the joy sticks and buttons with better quality. You can purchase risers to make them taller, some risers are themed. Personally not a fan, but hey for your waiting room at the doctor, dentist...could keep the kids busy.

Totally agree! The smell of aged wood and rat piss are part of the vintage experience, as is the "Suzy sucks dick" graffiti on the sideart
