So yesterday, in the dark, with latex gloves on, and running my lil hand vac I opened my WD drive. It was the second drive giving me problems. But when I took it apart (carefully) I noticed the heads were fine and not stuck like the other drive. So I tested it again with
a IDE/SATA to USB adapter I had. It was "clicking." The connector I have is a splitter. So it
comes off the power supply and then gets split two ways so I could power two drives. Well it
was clear at that point that one of the connections was faulty. Because when I tried the other the drive spun up no problem. I went back and tested the original drive with both connections,
it is %100 pooched. But luckily this 500GB was fine.
I got the new PC set up and running. I'll case these drives shortly. I'm just happy my loss was not as bad as I had originally thought.
PC issues.....wanted an opinion.

When a hard drive dies, 99.9% of the time it's the controller board on the drive (it overheats over time, and the silicon gates in the ICs can't restrict the flow of electricity anymore, which causes the heads to crash or "click").
That being said, it's cheaper to replace the drive than it is to find/buy a replacement controller (they are very specific to the actual drive model).
The only stab at getting a drive working is if the controller ICs aren't completely dead (i.e. they stop working once the drive is used for a while and heats up). In that case, you can often let the drive cool down and quickly copy the data off when you stick it in another computer.

Did I just read that correctly? You opened the second drive as well? *sigh*
There is no point in opening it, any chance you may have had in recovering any data is GONE as soon as you do so. The "Freezer Trick" does work every now and then as do some other things, in getting some of the data off, but opening it by the average joe and you HAVE taken away that possibility.
I'm very well versed in hardware repair, and even I wouldn't attempt this at home, it would toss any chance I had of recovering even a small amount of data, out the window.

Re: PC issues.....wanted an opinion.
I'm going to look into cloud options for data.
This was a wake up (pending that 2nd 500GB drive can have the data pulled off).
I have many, many external HDD's that I use, but I guess moving parts = prone to break down.
Lesson learned.
As far as opening drive 2........I thought it was toast. I wasn't going to pay to fix or recover the data, so I tried.
I should know tonight if I can pull the data off.
If I can great, if not, ah well.........I'm in the same boat I was two days ago when I thought both were FU*T!

I use Google drive. It's like 1.99 USD a month and I can get my data anywhere, phone, tablet, computer, etc. Plus I trust Google a hell of a lot more than any old hard drive I have laying around my house.

I have my server set up to email me if smartctl comes back with any issues...learned that the hard way after forgetting to check for months, and my movies hard drive committed seppuku. According to some tools I tried, I missed the failure by 72 days.
